How Do I Clean a Futon Mattress?

A futon mattress may be cleaned using a combination of methods, including a bleach solution for the wood or metal frame, a vacuum, a steam cleaner and baking soda for spot cleaning. It is important not to get the mattress too wet when spot cleaning, as the futon may retain water and cause mold to grow. It is also a good idea to air out the futon mattress once every month by placing it in the sun.

Part 1

Clean the futon frame

Begin by taking the futon mattress off the frame. Clean the frame using a solution composed of 1 1/2 cups of bleach diluted in a gallon of water. Use a spray bottle to apply the solution to the futon frame, and wipe it clean using a rag or paper towels.

Spot clean the futon mattress

Place the mattress flat, and run a vacuum over it to remove any stray dust and dirt particles. Apply a mixture of baking soda and water directly to individual stains, and allow the mixture to dry. Use the mixture sparingly so as not to overly wet the mattress. Once the mixture has dried, vacuum up the residual baking soda powder.

Steam clean the futon mattress

Purchase or rent a dry vapor steam cleaning unit to remove any excess mold or dirt from the mattress. Follow the unit's directions for operation. Once the mattress has been steam cleaned, hang it up or leave it out in the sun to air out and dry.
