How to Kill Mold in the House

Minor instances of mold can be easily killed and cleaned with typical household cleaning products, such as as bleach or another non-ammonia based solution. However, larger infestations can cause numerous health issues and often require intense protective measures from a qualified professional. Destroying mold in the house can take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of days depending on the severity of the problem.

Part 1

1

Locate and identify the mold

Check parts of your home that are damp or wet. Shower curtains, drywall, carpets and wooden structures are the most common growth spots. Mildew is the most visible type of mold, indicated by small, scattered spots that are typically black. Higher concentrations of mold may have an odor.

2

Scrub and clean small areas

Surface mold that grows on bathroom walls, siding and decks can be cleaned and removed using a solution of water and bleach. Use half a cup of bleach, one quart of water and some detergent. Be sure to wear protective gloves and clothing to prevent any direct contact with the mold or chemicals.

3

Consult a professional for large infestations

If the mold has spread to a carpeted area or drywall, it is best to call your local health department or a professional company for a solution. The carpet or drywall may need to be removed and replaced. Contact a professional as soon as possible to prevent the infestation from spreading and affecting other parts of your home.
